Program overview

By participating in this health internship program in Dawasamu, you’re actively supporting UN Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being. Your role involves providing healthcare education to the local Fijian community. Engage in public awareness workshops and support programs aimed at disease prevention and daily hygiene practices.

Interns can use official government health materials to develop interactive workshops in collaboration with recognised local authorities. Additionally, they may create support resources and gather extra information to assist the district nurse in gathering village-specific data, especially for diagnosing issues and monitoring recurring ailments.

During your free time you’ll be able to explore the nearby beaches, mountains ranges and tropical forests that make this region of Fiji such a unique destination.

GVI in Fiji has been a great experience! 2 weeks was not enough but definitely had time to engage with all the staff and other volunteers. Teaching and going around different villages as health internship has been so interesting. I feel grateful to have met everyone working here at GVI, they are all doing an amazing work in the community, health, education and marine.

“How did you meet your GVI bestie? Have you stayed in contact? Have you travelled together again, or met up afterwards?”While interning with GVI Dawasamu in Viti Levu Fiji. I, anxiously anticipated my pick up time to actually be transported to the village from Suva city. While I waited, I was met by such a kind face Izzy, who little did I know would become a lifelong best friend. We spent four weeks living together in GVI‘s base in Silana Village. Here we would come to learn about each others lives (myself from the United States and hers from England, UK). We found there to be so many differences, but also to be so similar in many ways, in ways distinctly, not many others, would understand other than sharing a portion of each others lives together in such a setting that GVI was able to give us. We communicate to this day- now near 5-months later, every day. We have planned a trip for her to travel here to United States, and hope to travel together internationally following those dates. The connection that formed with Izzy was not uncommon as everyone living in Silana formed a lifelong connection with either myself and/or each other. This opportunity was grounds for meeting amazing, like-minded people that love people and the world, the same way you do. Absolutely unforgettable.

This internship in the health program with GVI has changed my entire perspective on health and treatments with medicine. Dawasamu, Fiji shined a light on another way of life…specifically one where the earth can heal the body in similar ways. Vinaka Silana and Dawasamu!
