Work with GVI staff, other volunteers, and interns from around the world to support healthy lifestyles in the communities of Gordon’s Bay, a beach town located near Cape Town. Most of your time will be spent guiding sports during physical education lessons and after school programs at a local primary school. The purpose of these activities is to assist children with developing an awareness of the health benefits of physical fitness and build a habit of regular exercise.
GVI health volunteers will also work with women’s empowerment volunteers and interns who run girls empowerment classes at the local primary school. Here health volunteers can get involved in engaging the girls in women’s health and other well-being topics. In the process health volunteers will also be supporting gender equality.
Health volunteers will also support childhood education volunteers and interns who support the education of young students at local creches. Here health volunteers contribute to helping children master healthy hygiene habits like handwashing and toothbrushing as well as engaging them in other health topics like nutrition and exercise. Volunteers will learn how to make these topics engaging for this young age group through activities like singing, storytelling, arts and crafts, structured games, quizzes, and discussions.
Throughout your time on this program you gain first-hand experience of what the cultures of South Africa are really like. South Africa is a diverse country, and you will gain unique insight into the distinct cultures present in the region of Cape Town.
