This project works with a number of educare centres within townships in Cape Town that provide early childhood development education to local children. You will be involved in planning and implementing a project which uses educational games, song and dance, arts and crafts, gross and fine motor coordination and storytelling to allow these children to have fun, while learning and developing at the same time. For the children, a good understanding of English opens up many more opportunities in the future and you may also be involved in language skill classes where required.
In order to attend formal school in South Africa, learners must be at a certain academic level and you will be helping the children we work with to learn and develop their capacity to meet this standard in order to further their education. Sessions are intended to help the children develop their fine and gross motor skills. You will also help organize and run outdoor exercises and games, arts and crafts, storytelling, music and drama lessons.
Living in a coastal village close to Cape Town and Stellenbosch, you will be directly exposed to South African culture and the local community. Optional side trips, to the likes of Robben Island, Table Mountain, Cape Point, Cape Town wildlife safari and wine tasting in Stellenbosch, are for you to plan and explore when planning your visit to the country.
*Please Note: During holiday periods, all participants will join Cape Town’s school holiday program. During the school holiday period, all of GVI’s projects come together to work at a local library to provide a safe and educational space for children of all ages. Activities here possibly include a wide range, from tutoring, reading and arts & crafts, as well as sports and wellbeing. When possible to do so, the team also runs soup kitchens on the ground in the community.
