Program information

In Ghana, we work to tackle gender disparities by empowering girls and young women through education. Rooted in the belief that education and awareness are powerful tools against cultural barriers limiting girls’ potential, this program centres on the idea that educated, informed and confident girls can transform not just their lives, but also their communities and, by extension, the nation.

Program overview

As a participant in this program, you’ll work directly with girls and young women from the communities of Kokrobite. Working with local schools and groups such as the Ghana Girl Guides Association, the initiative extends beyond information-sharing. Its goal is to build enduring gender equality through cultural understanding and community involvement.

The program is a hands-on experience with key objectives:

  • Empowerment through education: Volunteers lead workshops on rights, autonomy, public speaking, career guidance, and combating gender-based violence, fostering self-esteem among girls and young women.
  • Cultural immersion: The program builds community ties through collaborative projects with local schools, partnerships with local organisations, and participation in cultural events, promoting understanding of local traditions.
  • Personal and professional growth: Volunteers acquire valuable skills in global development, actively participate in UN Sustainable Development Goals initiatives, and cultivate a professional profile with cross-cultural competencies.

GVI’s projects in Ghana focus on combining social and educational support to school girls, with more specialised support in healthcare, confidence-building and gender equality theory.

You’ll assist in delivering practical workshops, classroom talks and events on topics such as menstrual health, mental health and building healthy relationships, as well as discussing women’s rights, and mentoring students on a one-on-one basis. This will empower them to make self-determined choices, improve the quality of their health, and increase their contribution to the social development of Ghana. All of these activities will help GVI to deliver on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) including Goal 1: No Poverty, Goal 5: Gender Equality and Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities.

Participants are encouraged to explore projects beyond their main focus, spanning areas like gender equality, social justice, STEM/Tech education, early-years education, student mentoring, healthcare awareness and environmental capacity building. Overseeing around 50 projects annually, our goal is to ensure a well-rounded and impactful engagement.

In your free time, why not visit Kokrobite beach which is considered to be one of the best beaches in the region. Many find the pace of life here relaxingly slow, and the shady palm trees along the shoreline mean it’s a calm beach to visit at any time of the day.

When you’re ready to do your souvenir shopping, visit the local markets where you’ll find all forms of Ghanaian handicrafts from woven baskets to clay pots and handmade jewellery. This is also the best place to shop for locally dyed and woven textiles. Local tailors can transform boldly-coloured fabrics into custom made clothing for you, so you can take a little piece of Ghanaian colour home with you.

My time at GVI's base in Kokrobite, Ghana has been absolutely amazing. Not only is the community and local partnering schools (where we teach) great, but so is the staff, who are living at base with you. The staff make the base a safe and fun communal space to live in from the moment you set a foot through the door. I am certain that the experience would not have been the same if the staff and fellow participants were not as welcoming, openminded and including as they were.Furthermore, it is obvious when you walk through the community that the locals respect and appreciate GVI's presence here - which is rewarding to experience as a participant, because you know that you actually make a difference here in the local community.I would definitely recommend this experience to anyone who are interested in volunteer work in Africa.

5 week stay; not as long as I’d have liked but enough to understand how the community works and the impact we can (and can’t) and should (and shouldn’t) have here. The operation is very well run and I am impressed that they continually self-examine in ethical terms. The schools and the children are a delight. Our schedule wasn’t smooth; school exams and the Easter holidays created both positives and negatives; if I’d known in advance I might’ve come at a different time but I’m not unhappy with the way it played out.

Really excellent programme. The staff are fantastic and the projects are well run, thought provoking and engaging. There is an impressive focus on sustainability and building ties with/upskilling the local community in a way which other NGOs arguably do not. This reflective outlook means there is tangible, long term change. Ghana is also a very interesting country with friendly people and a fascinating culture. This was an authentic, immersive experience and I highly recommend to those who are hoping to experience Africa.

My journey started out pretty chaotic as my flight to Ghana got cancelled. I got on a new flight and when I arrived in Ghana a day later than expected, the airline had lost my luggage. I called GVI Ghana and the staff helped me to sort the situation quickly. Overall I am really pleased about my experience with GVI. All of the staff is very effective, acts fast and it is clear that they care a lot about their work. They make sure to give you the right tools and knowledge through training before starting any projects.I have grown personally, learnt about cultural differences and gained a new worldview and would highly recommend GVI to anyone who wants to volunteer.

I couldn't recommend GVI (especially GVI Ghana) enough! I have had an unforgettable 4 weeks and I am sure I will be returning sometime soon. Immersing myself in another culture, meeting incredible people and having a lot of fun along the way; all whilst growing personally and making real impact is truly a rare opportunity that I will never forget.

I am thrilled to share my volunteering journey in the beautiful community of Kokrobite, just an hour from Accra, as part of a Women Empowerment Programme with GVI Ghana. Over the course of two weeks, I had the privilege of working with young girls aged 7-15 across six different schools, igniting their potential and equipping them with invaluable life skills.During the first week, I had the pleasure of assisting in classrooms where I was immersed in teaching Decision Making, Effective Communication, Teamwork, and Conflict Resolution. Outside of my programme, I also got involved in other subjects such as Healthy Habits, Civic Engagement, and Sports. It was amazing to witness the girls engage enthusiastically, absorbing knowledge that will empower them for a lifetime. The second week was particularly special, as I delivered my own classes on "Breakout of your Mindset and Current Situations." The goal was for the girls to nurture a growth mindset, addressing fixed and growth mindset concepts, and exercising the impact of having limiting beliefs. Drawing from my own journey – from growing up in Angola to pursuing Electrical and Electronics Engineering at University of Birmingham, securing a graduate scheme at Siemens Mobility and now flourishing as an Engineer – I focused on the power of believing that everything is achievable through a growth mindset. One of the highlights was being part of computing workshops, where the students will earn well-deserved certificates. Although my direct teaching only lasted for two days, watching the girls' progress was very fulfilling. This journey wouldn't have been possible without the incredible support of each person who contributed towards my fundraising efforts. Thank you Siemens Mobility for encouraging and supporting me in my volunteering journey. My appreciation also goes to GVI Ghana who are doing all the groundwork and providing these unique experiences to people who are passionate about making a positive impact in the world. I continue to believe that education holds one of the keys to unlocking dreams and fostering positive change. My time in Ghana solidified this belief, and I am excited to continue advocating for education and women's empowerment!

I choose to volunteer at GVI Ghana on their Women Empowerment Programme and my experience has been amazing! I worked with young girls from 8-15 years old, teaching them Decision Making, how to set goals, how to communicate more effectively, how to become a leader, how to work in a team. I also had the opportunity to run a class on Breaking out of your mindset and current situations which focused on teaching them the concept of fixed and growth mindset and encouraging them to cultivate s growth mindset in order to achieve their goals and aspirations. I never had the chance to teach kids before, and I'm leaving this experience with better communication skills and it has made me grow a lot as a person. It has been a fantastic two weeks that I will never forget, it has been transformative personally for me and for the children I had the pleasure of meeting, and I gained a massive appreciation for teaching! Leaving Ghana knowing that they learnt something from the classes we teach them it's something beyond explanation and I can't thank GVI Ghana enough for the support and all the amazing work they have been doing here!

I really enjoyed my time in Ghana and I learned so much about a new culture that is so energetic, powerful and friendly. I have met so many great people and some strong friendships have been built. Teaching the children was a great experience and they have made me learned so much about their own country. I loved to explore new things and especially the beautiful nature of Ghana!

I volunteered at GVI Ghana for 4 weeks on the women’s empowerment programme, and it was the most amazing experience- I would recommend it to anyone and everyone. There is a wide variety in the lessons and projects provided that you can get stuck in to- my favourites being gender based violence, menstrual health, and fit Ed - and within each of those you have the ability to help plan and deliver the classes. The team have a great relationship with the schools, and we work on other projects with them such as painting and beach cleans with the kids. The kids are amazing and definitely are one of the things that made my time there what it was- and I know many others felt the same. Gvi Ghana itself is incredible in its focus on making sure it's impact led, and above all else that all the work done is ethical. From day 1 there is a strong focus on the ethics of the work you’re doing which I believe is so so important, and is definitely something that stuck with me. Beyond your projects, you can spend free time on base which is a beautiful place to live; in Kokrobite which has many social places like Big Millys, Kokrobite gardens and an incredible beach; or there are organised trips every other weekend. These were such a highlight of the experience and you become immersed in the history and culture of Ghana, as well as getting to see some beautiful sights! I went to Volta and we hiked mountains, swam in waterfalls, saw monkeys, drank palm wine... it was the best weekend!! There are also weekend trips to Cape coast to see the historic slave castles, and to Ada. The staff are incredible- shoutout to Will for (sometimes) making everyone laugh, to Naa for her delicious cooking, to Joanna for her beautiful jewellery and much needed laundry service, and most of all to Matt for making GVI Ghana what it is. The base pets are the cutest little things as well (I was very close to putting them in my bag and taking them home)! The overall experience genuinely was amazing, I'm planning to go back already and I would urge anyone to go, you will not regret it. For me it was the best decision I ever made and I would do it a million times over again.

If you want to have your heart stolen, you love children, and you want to be totally immersed in an Africa Community, then volunteering with GVI in Kokrobite, Ghana is the way to go.The children, both young and old, welcome you with open arms as soon as you walk into a school, the little ones want to hold your hand, they are so curious about who you are, and they all immediately ask you your name and introduce themselves. The older children shake your hand and the little ones often give you a fist bump. They ask you how you are and when you ask them how they are their standard answer is always 'fine'. They have so little, ask for nothing, and are so eager to learn.I had the privilege of working on a Empowerment Program for Girls going on to high school. This is what I shared with them on my last day."Thank you for coming to class today. From the bottom of my heart, I want to express my admiration for all that each of you have accomplished in the Girls Empowerment Education. You have opened your hearts and shared many of your thoughts and feelings with us all. It has been my privilege to learn and engage in your culture, customs and community. I have learned so much form each of you and am a better person for it."I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Kokrobite, and the places I was able to visit in Ghana. I will keep each of you in my heart as I go back to my home in Canada.Thank you for being on my Ferris Wheel of life! God continue to be with you and bless your lives.

I absolutely loved my time spent in Ghana. It's hard not to love living in tropical paradise with like-minded people, who are passionate about helping kids, families and helping the community. It wasn't a vacation but it felt like one, in the sense that my only responsibilities were to teach, learn and be kind to others.

GVI GHANA has given me everything I hoped for and more. All the projects have been fantastically organised and enjoyable , while having my own has stretched me out of my comfort zone in the best way. I have loved going on weekends away and experiencing different cultures and parts of Ghana as well as getting to know the country and its culture more generally. I wanted to go travelling somewhere that I wouldn't just pass through but really get to know and love the in terms of the people and local community and volunteering here for 2 months has given just that. I will never forget it.

I couldn’t have imagined how amazing my month in Ghana could have been. Not only did it give me a different cultural experience and perspective to various issues in my women’s empowerment programme; it helped me gain more confidence in my abilities both socially and on the projects. The projects were amazing and working with the local community and the kids was so rewarding. The social aspect was also so much more than I expected. Weekends away, social nights and the freedom to explore gave me the independence I didn’t think I had and helped me make some amazing friends.

Had the best month with the best people. My program was not as advertised - a lot more teaching younger kids than I thought but it's not a bad thing

One of the best experiences of my life. Love the people here, the kids and just the general community. The only thing I think could be better is creating more variation in projects for women's empowerment. I was only here for a month, so it was fine for me, but if you were here longer, it could be too repetitive.
