Program overview

Start building a career that is in alignment with your passion for achieving global gender equality objectives. Join staff and other participants from around the world in Nepal’s community of Pokhara to learn about, and contribute to, women’s empowerment initiatives. These are aligned to Gender Equality, the 5th Sustainable Development Goal set by the United Nations.

Some of the projects we run in the area include literacy, numeracy and life skills workshops for girls at a local school as well as professional skills development classes with local women. We also run conversational English classes for local women. Not only do these classes provide for a local need, the women are very keen to become proficient in English, but the classes also create a space where women can develop their own social support structure. We also run women’s health workshops featuring topics like prenatal health and child health. Additionally, we work in partnership with SASANE, an anti-human trafficking organisation, where our efforts go beyond English classes and confidence-building. Our focus is on enriching lives, supporting aspirations, and developing vital soft skills for personal growth.

Interns are also encouraged to set up their own project in alignment with ongoing initiatives with a focus specifically on women’s empowerment. Your assigned on-site GVI mentor will help you to identify a need among girls and women in the community as well as developing and implementing a practical solution.

I had the best four weeks interning in Nepal. I have made friends for life and all the GVI staff on base made me feel so welcome and comfortable since day one. They were all super knowledgeable and willing to do whatever was necessary to give us a home a way from home! This is an experience I would recommend to anyone!

I am beyond grateful to have had this experience and to have been able to work with such amazing and kind women. I have learned that meaningful connections can be formed easily across language barriers, countries, cultures, and ages. These are connections that I will stay with me as I move through my life.

After two months of hard work, and lots of fun, I have completed my Women's Empowerment Internship with GVI Nepal. Throughout this experience, I have grown more than I could ever have imagined and learned even more than I expected.During my time with GVI, I completed a qualitative research project in collaboration with one of the GVI’s Research Fellowship participants and a member of staff who acted as our translator. We conducted multiple focus group discussions and 1-1 interviews with the women that participate in the English classes and other women's empowerment activities offered by GVI. Once we finished analysing the research we presented our findings to GVI staff, participants and the students. Our research question was “How do GVI community women define and fulfill empowerment in their local context?”. We aimed to generate insights and a foundational understanding of the lived experience and social realities of the program participants. The research is grounded in the understanding that women's empowerment is a long-term process and goal. It is also highly contextual to individuals; their lived experiences, the cultural norms, and the historical context they live in.One of the most resonant findings from our research was that women are the agents of change in the process of empowerment, and they prioritised education as the vehicle for achieving this. The women demonstrated that one of the most important results of their choosing to reclaim their education was confidence building. This was, in part, attributed to the relationships built between students and volunteers. I was lucky enough to experience how these bonds were created and nurtured between women across generational gaps, cultural differences, and language barriers. The women I have met and bonded with in Nepal have impacted me greatly; their sheer kindness and warmth will stay with me as I begin the next leg of my journey. These women taught me that women's power comes from spreading love and spreading knowledge. I am so grateful to have been able to conduct this research, and for it to act as a vehicle for sharing their wisdom with fellow GVI participants and staff.

The team running the Pokhara hub were superb. They were really lovely, they truly care about the volunteers and the pupils. I felt always comfortable around them and well looked after. The homestay was good and the rooms and food adequate. Lakeside in Pokhara is a beautiful and safe setting to live in and from where to explore the nearby sites and treks on weekends. And the many local amenities like boating, open air cinema, local yoga classes, sound baths, I tried them all and loved them all. The teaching required, the structure and the groups were easy to follow and it made volunteering very interesting. There were regular feedback meetings after the teaching but we were far too hot in the afternoon to think and to focus, being more interested in showering or rest as the heat was intense at the end of April/May. The days have a calm pace and a lay back holiday feeling but watch out because the days passed and before you know it you are leaving!Overall I had a great experience, one that would stay with me for ever. Thank you.
